There’s nothing worse than opening your fridge to find that you’ve accidentally frozen your container of yogurt. Or, maybe you pull out your carton of milk to find that it is only slightly chilled.
A refrigerator that is too cold or not cold enough not only puts your food in jeopardy but it can mean a major decrease in efficiency.
The same is true for your freezer. Both could cost you a lot of money in groceries and higher bills. What temperature should your fridge and freezer be set to?
You want your food to stay fresh as long as possible in your fridge. The ideal temperature of your refrigerator should be 37 degrees fahrenheit (or anywhere between 35 and 38 degrees.). This will be warm enough to help to keep ice from forming on your food, but cool enough to keep bacteria from growing.
Unfortunately, most refrigerators come with a dial and the numbers one through five from which to choose your fridge’s temperature. How are you supposed to know if your fridge is actually set to 37 degrees?
Like other free appliance troubleshooting resources online, you can try searching the web to see if anyone with your same fridge has already done the leg-work and figured out which setting will help you achieve 37 degrees.
Otherwise, you’ll want to pick up a refrigerator thermometer. These can range anywhere from a few dollars to more than $25. Once you have one you can start experimenting with different dial settings and temperatures.
You can help your fridge stay a more consistent temperature by not over-stuffing your fridge, but keeping it full which will help it maintain the temperature.
Your freezer should be set to zero degrees fahrenheit. This is the ideal temperature to keep foods frozen all the way through. Just like your fridge, you may have to mess around with temperature settings and a refrigerator thermometer before you are able to achieve that setting. And like your fridge, it is important not to over-crowd your freezer so that air can’t circulate, but keep it full to maintain the temperature.
As you try to achieve the ideal fridge and freezer temperature and you are unable to get your fridge to the temperature you need, or are having trouble keeping a consistent temperature, you may need to consider looking into appliance repair services.
