Five Unknown Functions of Your Microwave

If you are like many people who live a fast-paced life with a hectic schedule, your microwave may be one of your best friends. Let’s say you’re rushing to get out the door, it can provide a warm meal in seconds. If you got caught up and don’t have time to boil water on the stove for your instant potatoes, just heat up some water in the microwave! The list goes on and on.

With as much use as you get out of your microwave now, there are actually many uses you might not be aware of. So start the New Year off right and take the ultimate advantage of your microwave with these five unknown functions of your microwave.

#1 Sanitize Sponges

After cleaning many dishes and hanging around a wet sink, sponges can become pretty gross. But by zapping it in the microwave you can kill up to 99.9% of germs! Soak your sponge with water (be sure to do this, otherwise you may set a dry sponge on fire!) and microwave for about two minutes. And voila! You have a sanitized sponge.

#2 Save Your Stamps

Have you ever accidentally put a stamp on the wrong envelope? Stamps are relatively cheap, but they’re also something you don’t want to waste. If you try to peel it off you may rip the stamp. And if you do manage to get it off you have no way of re-attaching it! With the help of your microwave, simply put a few drops of water on the stamp and microwave it for about 15 seconds. You will then be able to easily remove the stamp!

#3 De-Clump Brown Sugar

Clumpy brown sugar makes baking irritating. It’s harder to measure, and also harder to get that cookie dough batter nice and smooth! Moisten a paper towel and put it inside your box of hardened brown sugar. Then, close it up tight and microwave for about 25 seconds. The wet paper towel will help re-moisturize and de-clump the sugar.

#4 Get More Juice

If you use a lot of lemon or lime juice in your kitchen, you can get even more out of each fruit by zapping it in the microwave. Just put the lemon or lime in the microwave for about 15 seconds. It’ll be easier to juice the fruit and you should be able to get every last drop more easily!

#5 Quickly Peel Garlic

Peeling garlic is one of the most tedious (and smelliest) tasks in the kitchen. It leaves your fingers sticky and smelly for days! But by putting a clove of garlic in the microwave for 15 seconds, it traps the moisture between the skin and the clove, making the skin much easier to remove.
