Maintenance Tips to Keep your Washing Machine Happy

There is no faster way to strain your mental well-being or your wallet than an ill-timed appliance breakdown. Whether it’s your washing machine, refrigerator, or oven, the inconvenience alone can really throw a wrench into your daily and weekly routine. One of the best ways to avoid these situations is to do monthly and yearly maintenance on your appliances. Doing a few simple tasks now could mean avoiding a repair altogether, or taking care of an issue before your appliance is out of commission for several days.

Today on Peter’s Appliance blog, we’re sharing six maintenance tips that will keep your washing mashing running smoothly.

Use the right detergent

This may not seem like a big deal, but it is important to use the correct detergent and amount of detergent for your washing machine.  Failing to follow the specifics in your owner’s manual could actually damage your appliance, so read carefully!

Dry the door and gasket

After you’ve done your laundry for the day, wipe down the door and gasket on a front loader. This will help avoid mold or mildew. If you have a top loader, keep the door open to allow for good air flow to avoid any growth as well.

Level footing

This is probably something you only need to check every several months as you should notice right away if your washing machine is shaking or vibrating, but you should make sure your washing machine is level and secure at all times. An uneven machine can throw off your drum and cause other problems that will lead to avoidable repairs.

Inspect hoses

You should inspect the hoses on your washing machine each month for any leaks, cracks or other signs of wear. If they are loose, tighten them. If they look damaged, call a professional to have them replaced immediately. A hose that bursts unexpectedly can cause major flooding in your home. Hoses should be replaced every five years; when the time comes, upgrade to a stainless steel hose for more peace of mind.

Clean drum

Each month it is a good idea to clean the drum and rubber gasket. All it takes is a simple solution of water and vinegar in equal parts. Doing this will keep your machine clear of any buildup or residue from dirty clothes or laundry detergent as well as fighting any mold or mildew growth. This will also help keep your washing machine and clothes smelling great!

Clean fabric softener dispenser

As you cleaning out the drum? Give the fabric softener dispenser a nice scrub too. It doesn’t take much for the viscous liquid to build up, which could cause problems for your machine. Keep things moving smoothly by wiping out the dispenser when necessary.
